The Ossification of the Peripatetic Soul
The azure expanse, once a canvas of unbridled caprice,
Where the zephyrs whispered secrets of obsidian peaks and saline mists,
Has retreated into the sepia-toned annals of memory,
Leaving behind a phantom ache, a residue of the sublime.
Oh, the peripatetic splendor! The kaleidoscopic flux of the unknown,
Where every meridian offered a metamorphosis of the spirit,
And the soul, unmoored and unburdened, danced upon the precipice
Of an infinite, ephemeral transcendence.
But the threshold has been crossed; the heavy latch of domesticity
Closes with a finality that reverberates like a funereal toll.
The maps are folded, their creases becoming scars upon the parchment,
And the compass, once a guide to the celestial and the strange,
Lies dormant amidst the clutter of the mundane.
Now, the air is thick with the stultifying scent of the familiar—
The stale aroma of dust, the tepid breath of the hearth,
The suffocating stillness of walls that have seen too many suns
Rise and set in the same, predictable, pedestrian arc.
To return is not to arrive, but to undergo a slow disintegration.
There is a profound dissonance in the rhythm of the quotidian,
A cacophony of silence where once there was the roar of the tempest.
The clock, that relentless, mechanical tyrant,
Ticks with a Sisyphean monotony, carving away the marrow of existence,
Measuring life in increments of beige and gray,
In the repetitive drudgery of the breakfast ritual,
The banal cadence of the evening's descent into sleep.
How does one reconcile the vastness of the horizon
With the claustrophobic confines of the hallway?
The mind remains a vagabond, wandering through distant latitudes,
While the body is tethered to the stasis of the sedentary.
I am an anachronism in my own dwelling,
A specter haunting the corridors of my former stability,
Searching for the salt-crusted wind in the stale drafts of the parlor,
Seeking the kaleidoscopic light in the dim, domestic twilight.
This is the bereavement of the wanderer:
The mourning of the self that existed in the liminal spaces,
The version of the soul that was forged in the crucible of the foreign.
The return is a slow ossification, a hardening of the spirit
Into the predictable molds of social obligation and routine.
The world has shrunk to the diameter of a porcelain cup,
And the grand odyssey has been supplanted by the trite mechanics of survival.
The heart, once a tempestuous sea of possibility,
Now beats with the heavy, leaden inertia of the known,
Struggling to breathe amidst the crushing weight of the ordinary.
