The Vellum Mirage of Deferred Intent
In the dim, amber-hued twilight of mercantile caprice,
I summon forth a codex, a geometric sanctuary of planned design,
Bound in the sinews of faux-leather, an exquisite, tactile lie,
A vessel of promised order, where chaos and chronology entwine.
With a frantic, fevered fervor, the transaction is consummated,
An acquisition of hope, an ephemeral balm for the fragmented soul,
Each leaf a pristine expanse, an unblemished, snowy field,
Waiting for the ink’s dark pilgrimage to make the fractured whole.
Oh, the pulchritudinous symmetry of the unblemished folio!
A tabula rasa, hauntingly immaculate, devoid of errant script,
Wherein the ideal self resides, a paragon of temporal discipline,
In whose shadow the clumsy, procrastinating ego is eclipsed.
But lo! The threshold of the first incision, the inaugural stroke,
Invokes a paralyzing dread, a profound, existential malaise;
To mar the sanctity of the void is to commit a sacrilege,
To shatter the illusion of perfection in the labyrinthine maze.
Thus, the siren song of the morrow begins its insidious chant,
A mellifluous lullaby of "to be commenced when the dawn is new,"
An ontological deferral, a trick of the temporal mind,
That transmutes the vibrant present into a phantom, distant hue.
"Tomorrow," the psyche whispers, with an obsequious, velvet tongue,
"Tomorrow, thou shalt be the architect of a disciplined, rhythmic grace,"
Yet "tomorrow" is a liminal specter, a receding, mirage-like shore,
A non-existent dimension in this entropic, relentless race.
The codex retreats to the periphery, to the dusty, forgotten shelf,
Joining the ossified relics of aspirations long since decayed,
A reliquary of unfulfilled mandates and sequestered dreams,
Where the ghosts of intended virtues are perpetually laid.
The binding gathers the gray shroud of stasis and neglect,
As the calendar’s cyclopean wheels turn in indifferent gyre,
While the heart, caught in the doldrums of its own desultory whim,
Consumes the very hours it once vowed to kindle with fire.
Is it not a grand, tragicomical comedy of the human condition?
To seek salvation in the purchase of a structured, ink-stained cage?
To believe that mere parchment can tether the galloping wind,
Or transcribe the wild, unmanageable prose of our passing age?
We are collectors of potentiality, curators of the "not yet,"
Languishing in the lacuna between the desire and the deed,
While the pristine pages remain as silent, snowy witnesses,
To the profound, vacuous hunger of our unrequited greed.
The ink remains in the well, a dark, dormant, viscous sea,
And the planner remains a monument to the self we failed to be;
An exquisite, leather-bound epitaph of the moments we let slip,
A hollow, beautiful vessel, lost in the temporal, dark eclipse.
